Spelling Bee 2018

After some days preparing for the great event, with different groups rounds and some training, yesterday the day came and we celebrated our school final for this year Spelling Bee.
It was a great day for all the participants and also for all their classmates who were excited cheering for their classmates. Like every year we celebrated three different finals, one for each group of participants attending to their levels (1st and 2nd year; 3rd and 4th year; 5th and 6th year).
It was a real success thanks to the help of our two assistants, Liz and Maddison, the English teachers in the school and all the other teachers and people helping our event to be a great day for everybody.
Here you can see some pictures of our winners and other moments in our school finals.

And the winners are...

Sara Morales Jiménez.
Alejandro Morillo González.
Nuria Yáñez Luque.

They will have the opportunity to represent our school in the AMCO Spelling Bee National Contest on May 5th 2018 in Madrid.

CONGRATULATIONS AND GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL!!

Valentine´s Day in the USA...and now, Spain!

Some of my favorite memories of Valentine´s Day include the celebrations from school. Once you begin kindergarten, which is the American equivalent of 3rd of infantil, you make a Valentine´s Day mailbox every year. This mailbox is normally an old shoebox or kleenex box that you cover with fabric or colored paper. You can decorate your mailbox with hearts and glitter, or you can get more creative. Most mailboxes are decorated with the typical colors of Valentine´s Day: pink, red, purple, and white. The most important part of your mailbox is that the box is big and that it has an opening.

Before Valentine´s Day, your teacher gives you a class list with the names of all the students in your class. You buy or you make a Valentine´s Day card for each of your classmates. This card can have a Valentine´s Day theme, or many children´s Valentine´s Day cards include their favorite cartoon characters. The most important part of the card is that you write something you love about your classmate inside the card. You also buy or make enough Valentine´s Day sweets or candies for each student in your class.

On the day of Valentine´s Day, it´s expected you´ll see children with pink or red clothing. The students come inside the classroom and put their Valentine´s Day mailbox on their desk. When the time is right, the teacher tells the students to begin walking around the classroom and dropping their Valentine´s Day cards into each of the mailboxes. Afterwards, the children also exchange sweets. Children bring candies, cookies, muffins, or small toys. Classes may talk about what they love and read books about Saint Valentine. The teachers may also bring sweets for one another.

Adults often celebrate Valentine´s Day with a nice dinner or by exchanging flowers and gifts. Parents often give their children small gifts for Valentine´s Day.

Valentine´s Day cards are the biggest tradition that all ages participate in. Writing a letter to someone to tell them some reasons why you love them is a very kind way to celebrate the holiday.

This year, at Los Olivos, we celebrated Valentine´s Day. The students brought 4 sweets to share with some of their classmates, they made letters for a friend or a family member, and we talked about the different people, places, and things that the students love.

Here are some photos from the Valentine´s Day celebration in 3rd D.

AMCO - Daily Routine -

Today, we will explain what the Daily Routine consists of.  The Daily Routine starts at the beginning of the class.  The students know that this is a time for working together and demonstrate their speaking skills. They enjoy participating and everyone is given the opportunity to speak and always in English!

The Daily Routine consists of the following activities:

Greetings
Days of the week
The weather
Feelings
Class rules

A quick review of what’s already been learned!

All this is accompanied with visual and audio aids such as posters, flashcards and songs….

Here is a video where you can see what is all about. Enjoy it!!!

Mind mapping

Mind maps are a very useful tool that we use a lot in our English classes. It's a fantastic way to organize and remember ideas when speaking about a particular topic, and they are really fun to do!
We use them since our very first levels until the older ones in Secondary Education.

Here you can see some examples.

You can use this technique to improve your learning and to organize your ideas in any field you want.

Let's try it!!

"Our little Britain"

Last term, in Level 2 we worked about London to understand better Flash Fox culture.
Every week we learnt about some cultural aspects, traditions, food and monuments. We learnt a lot! Besides, we learnt shapes, colors, numbers, prepositions...and how to make tea!
Here you can watch the little museum that we produced with our families help.

Enjoy!
