Improving Our Speaking Skills

Communication skills are developed with practice, that is why in 3rd Grade we work to develop good communication skills in the students from their youth, to equip them straight away with the skills to build a successful future.

Month One as an English Language Assistant from USA

Hello!

My name is Liz Shah, and I'm one of the new English Language Assistants here at Colegio Los Olivos. It's been quite the exciting month here in Málaga, and it's hard to believe that I'm going on week six of being in Spain. Some days feel incredibly slow, and sometimes it feels as though I've hardly blinked and the day is over. Certainly, the most exciting part is being a teacher at the school. The kids made each day an exciting challenge.

One of the surprising parts of teaching here is that many of the students actually already have a decent basis for English! The students have good foundations built on a strong vocabulary. However, because many of the teachers at the school learned English at a British institution or in another European, English-speaking country, my American accent was difficult to understand at first for most of the students. I am learning to over-annunciate my words and speak more slowly. My family has already noticed and joked about how I talk to them much more clearly on the phone.

Overall, I've already been impressed with how much more the kids are talking to me in English. It's been fun to have various students run into me during the day and hug me while shouting, "hello teacher Liz!" I am so excited to see how much the students grow and learn throughout the school year.

Signed
"Teacher Liz"

How to become a "Good Writer"

Writing is an important part of human communication used in everyday situations.
That is why at "Los Olivos School" we think that it is crucial to start teaching good writing since the first years of primary up to secondary grades. But... what is good writing?

- A good writer uses the language correctly, with no mistakes.

- A good writer knows how to organise ideas in the text to make them clear.

- A good writer uses effective procedures to write.

- A good writer knows hot to change the language according to the social situation.

" Nice to meet to Dr.Seuss"

Hello dear families, great to see you back to our blog!
We have been working each Friday, with 3 and 4 years old students some stories of the famous writer Dr.Seuss.
Theodor Seuss Geise was an American writer, cartoonist, animator, book publisher, and artist best known for authoring children's books under the pen name Dr. Seuss
Some of his most famous story books are “the cat in the hat”, “Horton hears a who”, “How The Grinch Stole Christmas”,  “the lorax”, or “ONE FISH, TWO FISH, RED FISH, BLUE FISH”.
Geisel wrote most of his books in anapestic tetrameter, a poetic meter employed by many poets of the English literary canon. This is often suggested as one of the reasons that Geisel's writing was so well received.
We have tried to work into  the “sentimental” part of each story, teaching them how to recycle ( the lorax) to take care about others (Horton) and to do all our best to be nice with others ( the cat in the hat).

Here we attach some pictures of our crafts and works in class, hope you enjoy at much as we do in class, and remember “The more that you read, the more thing you will know, the more that you learn, the more places you’ll go”.
